When I created my RM 8 File by importing from my Legacy 9 file, all the media links were broken. But, I discovered that it’s easy to reset all the links ...

With the file open in RM 8, select the Media tab from the left. In the Multimedia window, elect the 3 dots on the right (next to the trashcan), select “Fix broken media links, then point RM to parent folder or drive where the media files here. Easy if the media files are not scattered all over ...

Interesting that their website says "Roots Magic can directly import data from PAF, Legacy, TNG or Family Origins. It also imports GEDCOM files .....". That would imply that it can access the Legacy database and should be able to copy the media links.

BUT, their support site says that you need to generate a GEDCOM from Legacy and import that.

So, which one is correct?

If RootsMagic is installed on the same computer and your images linked in Legacy remain where they are, there will be links included in your GEDCOM file used to move your Legacy data. Once imported into RootsMagic, this program will find the images, based on the links. If you then, at some point, move or rename these linked images, you will encounter the same situation as you would in Legacy. RootsMagic, like Legacy, only links to the images.

I know this is off topic, but when you migrate from Legacy to Roots Magic, is there a way to transfer everything, meaning what's in the Media Gallery? The only way I know how to transfer to another platform like Roots Magic is a gedcom and from what I understand, media does not get included.

Yes, that is the platform I'll be using.  RM8 seems to be a significant improvement over RM7.  Its global search and replace feature will allow me to easily correct the spelling errors caused by the lack of unicode support in Legacy.

Just to close the loop on my question regarding unicode and Legacy, I received this response from Legacy Customer Support...

We have not been told the full features of Legacy 10 and you are correct; nothing is set in stone.  That being said, I am pretty confident that full Unicode support will not be in Legacy 10.  Full Unicode support would require a complete rewrite of Legacy using a different coding base.  I have not been told of any plans for a full rewrite in Legacy 10.

So it looks like I need to migrate my tree to another platform...

Legacy users,

I have a question about Legacy and GEDCOM exports.

It appears that the most recent version of Legacy 9 is 9.0.0.393. I am using Legacy 9.0.0.339 so I plan to upgrade to get to the latest version.

When I export a GEDCOM file, I see these records at the top that indicate the file was written by Legacy 9:

0 HEAD

1 SOUR Legacy

2 VERS 9.0

That seems correct.

However, another Legacy user sent me a GEDCOM file with this version information:

0 HEAD

1 SOUR Legacy

2 VERS 10.0

Is there a Legacy 10? I looked on the LegacyFamilyTree.com site and I don't see any mention of it.
