Ian,
I also use Best Fit columns. If I want to see a grid with the children,
I switch to Descendant View and limit the number of generations showing.
You can change the View for the Child list as Margaret says or just
right click on the Child area of Family View and use View from the Right
Click menu. So you could move back and forth from the Child Grid if you
prefer it. I assume you know you can customise the columns for the Child
Grid, Descendant View and Index View and save several different sets and
switch between them easily.

This allows a 12 children family to be displayed in 3 columns.

I would like to capture some views of my data for a talk / display
of family (various generations). Perhaps this would be easier with
a report, but the colours in the usual user edit views are more
attractive than the paper prints.
Is there a way to change the view in Legacy, to see more than
about 5 or 6 children in the Children pane?
I have this in grid list. By minimizing the Ribbon I can see 7
children. It might be helpful if the Parents pane could be
"switched off", and the lower ones have more vertical space - but
I can see that would create other problems (usability, programming).
There are other views, like Descendants, which are flexible enough
to show a few generations if the families are small.
