What I do if I transcribe something with errors, missing last names
etc., I enclosed the corrections/additions in {} not [] or(). These are
almost never
in documents, especially hand written, as they are harder to draw, so
they stick out to me. I then at the bottom under the signatures, put
a note describing the 'edit' I placed in the document. I also do this
for spelling errors and grammar mistakes, then if I send it to someone,
they can easily delete the additions easily if needed. The note might
look like this.
changes 1. {Johnson} For some reason, Joe Smith didn't remember his
daughter's married name, or he was unable to talk well, or the people
nursing him didn't bother. The list of heirs in the inventory gives her
full name, so there is no doubt about who she is.
I don't fill in missing data without the accompanying 'changes' note,
because I have seen transcriptions that were dead wrong about the
corrections, or even worse, no acknowledgment there is a change.
Hopefully this gives you an idea how to 'correct' transcriptions
accurately. There should be no shortcuts. I would not change the name
in any case to a later surname, because you are basically editing a
legal document, with a 'time stamp', which should be changed as little
as possible. I also
have for example a will that says 'all my nephews and nieces' but they
were not listed. One had died before the reading of the will. They are
only listed in the final inventory, so that is the only place they
should be listed.
Hope this helps
