Flora,

Files saved on a CD have their file attribute automatically changed to
Read-only by the CD-RW software, unless you are running "Direct CD" or other
type of CD-burning software. When you enter data into Legacy, it must be
able to write to the family file, but it cannot when the file attribute is
changed to Read-only. In addition, when you attempt to open the family file
on the CD, Legacy tries to create an .LDB file in the same directory;
however, most CD-RW's are unable to write this file "on the fly" which
causes error messages. The result is that you cannot open a Family File that
has been saved onto a CD.

The solution is to copy the family file from the CD back to a hard drive.
Next go to Windows Explorer, find the file, right-click on it and select
Properties from the popup menu. In the Properties screen that opens, click
the General tab. You will see the boxes for read-only and archive at the
bottom. Uncheck the Read-only property.

When using a CD-RW, the CD writer must also be the CD reader that reads your
CD. We recommend that you use a CD-RW for backups only.

Thanks,

Subject: [LegacyUG] files on CD

Although I have tried about a dozen dos and windows genealogy programs in
the
past 10 years and have used Legacy only a few months, I think it is the
best.
I input my information into Legacy on my hard drive with gedcom of records
from my Generations program. I would like to have all my information on CD
and input my data or pics directly to the CDrw instead of hard drive so I
could take it from one computer to another or even make copies for
relatives.
I would appreciate any help or information.
