Good Day Marie,
You will find a File ID# text box on both the Source (the Source Info tab)
and Details (the Detail Information tab) entry dialogs. Both the Source and
Details entry identify the entry you add as File ID#, however the way that
information apparently prints to reports differs. The following illustrates
the entry and printing of the information you add:
Source entry (File ID#) ---> reports (ID#)
Details entry (File ID#) ----> reports (Cit ID#)
Unfortunately, a single report option (Include the File ID #) controls the
printing of both the source and detail entries information you add. You
cannot print one without the other. Plus, although the entry for each is
identified as File ID#, what information prints for a source is as ID# and
for details as Cit ID#. Neither printed output matches the name of the
input. Sort of confusing.
You asked about how to generate an ID number. Please understand there is no
'correct' method, however there are a couple of 'systems'.
Many people use a method where source records are organized by family
groups, with the numbering sequentially within each group. Please see
"Managing a Genealogical Project" by William Dollarhide - ISBN 0-8063-1222-X
or "Organizing Your Family History Search" by Sharon DeBartolo Carmack -
ISBN 1-55870-511-2 for detailed information.
Another method is by record type (census, birth, marriage, death, etc) and
numbered sequentially, touted by Elizabeth Kelley Kerstens, originator of
Clooz, with a downloadable manual (which contains information about this
system) at www.clooz.com/pubs/manual.exe .
These are the two 'basic' systems, with many versions between. You may wish
to look at both, than pick a system that meets your research and record
keeping procedures.
Hope the above helps a bit.
