I tried 2 user-defined events, per Wm's suggestion, and can't replicate 
this, and have never seen it (and I do the Show List & View Tagged on 
Events several times a week on several databases). Have you run 
Check/Repair? Are you sure you're not clicking "Untag everyone in list" 
instead of "everyone in file" (I'm sure you're not doing this, but it's 
worth asking...)

When you're looking at the Show List, make note of the number of people in 
the list (the number is shown in the title bar) and compare it to the 
number of people who show up in the Search List when you Show Tagged - are 
they the same?

Does anything different happen if you use, say, tag 3 instead of tag 1?
