Glen; I add a census event for each person listed in the household. I source each (using source clipboard). Then in the notes I list the entire household, basically as you had it listed in your message (except I include the last names). I place a header in the notes section similar to the following (the first line is in bold and underlined):
1860 U.S. Census Assumption, Christian, IL - household #33, pg. 14 It does take a little longer, but when I print out a FGS, I can select to print the events and each census taken during the person's life is listed. My events read something like: "He appeared on the 1860 census in Assumption, Christian, Illinois, USA. Moses Osborn age 69, born in NY, a farmer." I hope that helps, but as others said - there is no right or wrong way. Just whatever gives you the information you want. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Glen Engels" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Monday, August 18, 2003 10:30 AM Subject: [LegacyUG] Census Events and Sources > This may or may not have a single "right" answer, but here goes: > > What is the best way to handle census entries in Legacy? > > A census represents an Event in a person's life, since it shows a lot of information about them at a snapshot in their life. > But that same information in the census is a Source for birthdate, birthplace, occupation, etc. > > I guess my main question is about the census entry itself, for example: > John Smith age 35 occupation farmer born NC (and maybe other info like value of land owned, can or cannot read/write, etc) > Jane wife age 30 born SC > John Jr age 10 born SC > Mary age 8 born GA > William age 6 born GA > > Where should one enter all the above detailed information from the census itself? This is supplying information about 5 different people (maybe more people, since a few censuses also show John's and Jane's parents' birthplaces). Should the actual census entry be entered as part of the Census Event for all these respective people? Or should each person's Census Event only show the relevant information for that one person, and the whole entry would be entered as part of the Citation Detail for the Source of the Event? When reports are printed (let's say a Descendant Narrative), do you tend to want the above detail printed out every time, i.e. to recur when every person from the entry is listed? Or just for the head of household, since the children would show up near him in the report and you may not want to see all the census detail every time? > > As a related question, I noted with great interest this archived message on being able to essentially Copy and Paste Events, using the Merge feature as a back-door method: > http://www.mail-archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/msg35818.html > This looks like an extremely useful way to get a Census Event entered for every relevant person. I guess this is what people are still doing to copy and paste Events (particularly Census Entries, which almost always apply to multiple people), or has Legacy come out with a new feature that makes this easier (to avoid all the WARNING msgs that you get on the Merge screen)? > > Thank you, > Glen Engels > > > Legacy User Group Etiquette guidelines can be found at: > http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp > > To find past messages, please go to our searchable archives at: > http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup%40mail.millenniacorp.com/ > > To unsubscribe please visit: > http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/LegacyLists.asp > > --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.
