fbk is a backup file for Family Tree Maker. That cannot be opened directly
into Legacy. You need to have a gedcom from that program. That file will
have an extension of .ged. Then, in Legacy, you can go to File > Import
from... > Gedcom file.

For details, please go to our website at

and Importing.

Thanks for using Legacy.

Subject: [LegacyUG] bringing .FBK into Legacy

Hi All,

I hope someone can advise me....and I'll try to make a long story short!

My cousin's computer died, and when she replaced it, her back-ups (on
floppy disks) wouldn't load; she uses Family Tree (I have no idea if this
is the same as Family Tree Maker?). Her brother has a back-up floppy also,
but evidently he doesn't have a genealogy program, just a physical floppy
in case something happened to hers. So he emailed me the file(s) on the
floppy, 'cause we thought I could GEDCOM it into my Legacy program and try
to GEDCOM it back to cousin. Well, it came to me as a .FBK not a GEDCOM,
which doesn't seem to be anything that my computer or my Legacy program
recognizes. (Can you see that my helping my cousin is a case of the blind
leading the blind???)

Am I correct in assuming that I now need to get a copy of the same
genealogy program as she uses, to open this? I guess I'd then need to
convert it to GEDCOM to export it to Legacy, so that I am her new back-up,
and so that I can send it back to her as a GEDCOM in hopes that it will
then load for her. Hopefully, my library has a copy of this genealogy
program to check out (not that I'll get there today, we're snowed in!)

I hope someone can tell me if this is what I need to do to use Legacy to
get at her files. (BTW, her brother tried emailing her the same files, and
she still couldn't open it.) The thought of her re-entering all that info
is a sad one!
