You don't actually have "preferred parent".

You have "preferred spouse" for each spouse and also preferred child.

I added a link from the child for the second husband so I could set him to
Stepfather (actually set the son to Stepson) but this results in him always
being displayed as the father when I come up the tree from child to parent.
I have noticed this before in other families and the only way to get out of
it seems to be not link stepchildren to the new parent.
