I simply use <___> for an unknown name, first or last. Legacy has no problem with it, and it is instantly obvious as to meaning. If a maiden name is unknown, I use the married name thusly, Jane <Doe>. Works for me.

How do some of you enter people with unknown names in such a fashion that
the word "Unknown" is hardly ever used? Anyone have a strategy for this? I'd
love to be able to see a last name, be able to see that it means "unknown"
and to whom it applies in most cases.
