Then perhaps you should start with a known good database and test to 
see what happens with it.

Create a new database > File > New Family File > name it Test and 
then click Save.  Add only one new individual and DO NOT give that 
person a cause of death.

Now follow the original steps to Search for all individuals with a 
Death Cause.  Does it find that record ? -- it shouldn't.

If that works and your original database doesn't then try exporting 
all your records to a new database.  Then test with it.
