And while we are at it, I reported quite a long time ago that repeating information in any of these fields by clicking on the "hot spot" automatically moves the cursor into the next field. So if you then add a source, expecting it to be added to the (say) birth data you will find yourself inadvertently adding the source to the christening field. It is a pain to use the 'repeat' shortcut, only to have to remember to check that the cursor is still in the right field (it wont be) then move it back to the correct place before you add the source. Worse still, it is a pain not having realised that the source has been added to the wrong field until AFTER it has been added. And I still don't know how many times I haven't noticed so that the source is forever linked to the wrong field. I seem to recall that I found this out when I tried to add a source and the cursor had jumped to a field that couldn't have a source attached - but I can't make that happen now. I thought it was when I was adding burial information and the cursor jumps to User ID. I do notice that in that instance now the source will jump to Unspecified, so perhaps that has been a change in behaviour since I first noticed the glitch.
I just checked my own sent messages, and I was right. I reported the problem in June 2003. It was the 'Buried' field that alerted me to the problem, because it used to bring up a message that said the Cursor is in a field that doesn't accept sources. Now, apparently it will accept an 'Unspecified' source, but the cursor is still in the wrong place, so the source will be incorrectly assigned unless one remembers / notices that the cursor is in the wrong place.
Cheers Jan

And just to fan the flames of the debate still further, the same behaviour occurs to the left of the birth, christening, death and burial date fields. They are set up to repeat the information last entered in such a field if you click to the left of the field - this hot spot actually extends to the very left hand edge of the screen - I've often repeated information by accident when I've been clicking on the sourcing buttons to the left of these fields and have missed and have instead clicked to the left of the sourcing buttons. I've always found this rather strange.

Just how far away from where we are clicking are we supposed to look?
In my case, clicking TO THE LEFT OF the "Private" check box, in order to make Legacy the active window and bring it to the foreground, causes the not-then-visible 1/8-inch "Never Married" check box TEN INCHES AWAY to get checked. When Legacy pops up full-screen, am I supposed to somehow notice that that box is now checked even though it never was?
I don't know of anyone who reads the entire screen every time they click, especially when clicking in the supposedly inert background. And I certainly wouldn't expect anyone to remember if all the data on that screen was still correct.

Just look at "options" in Excel, Word, Outlook etc. They all exhibit the same issue.
The moral seems to be to look at your screen when you start clicking

I'm not so sure it's a Microsoft problem. I've never seen any other Windows based program that behaves like this for radio buttons or check boxes.
