Hi Mary & DC, First:
Have your local Family History Center contact Legacy for the Deluxe version. I work at a Family History Center and we have the Deluxe version on our computers supplied to us by Legacy. Second: Why don't you just run your Legacy data file directly from your flash drive all the time??? I have my Legacy information on my Flash Drive and run from my flash drive on all computers I use. I back up to my C:\ drive at home. This eliminates me from having to backup and restore my file from computer to computer. I use my flash drive for other things, but have a folder on it called Genealogy. I have my Legacy databases in this folder. I have a subfolder called "Images" for pictures and scanned copies of birth, marriage, death, baptismal, and any other certificate I can get. (Things that people source - I have a copy of the image in my genealogy. Why not let people see your source instead of traveling around the world to find the crap you have had to hunt down???) For my C:\ drive: I have a folder at the root of C:\ called "GenDump" and inside this folder I have a folder called "Backup." When exiting Legacy, I backup my database to this "backup" folder to the appropriate file. I also backup my whole memory drive either daily or weekly to the computer by doing a copy and paste of all files and folders on the memory drive to a folder on my computer. I then burn this to CD from time to time. I don't want to have to re-do all my work. So far, I have 31,000 people in my database with 2100+ images attached. I have all of this on a 1 Gigabyte memory drive. (The images are small images - The large copies of the images I have on DVD for printing or publishing purposes) Running your database directly from the memory drive will eliminate the possibility of copying the wrong file over top of your newest data since you will only have the newest. DC - Legacy cannot be installed directly to a flash drive that I know of. However, I use my file as described above without leaving any data on any other computer. I would love this functionality, but without a total re-write I don't see this happening. I wouldn't ask a total re-write of any programmer. That is a ton of work for a small convenience for so few. As stated above, I work at a Family History Center and am able to use my Legacy files directly from my memory drive on any of the computers that support USB. I don't have to restore and then backup. I simply plug my drive in and access it like another hard drive. If your pictures aren't showing in Legacy, you can just go to Options / Customize / Locations and click on "View Current List of Multimedia Locations..." Once in this list, ADD your location, don't Change anything in the list. For an example: I have E:\Genealogy\Images. If the drive letter for the flash drive on a new computer was G:\, I would add "G:\Genealogy\Images" to the list and my images would show again. I would have both locations in the list incase I used this new computer again. Hope this helps.
