The cheap reader I have (made by SIIG) makes it's home in a USB port on 
the front of my computer - - recognized the same as any external drive, 
no software installation required. Works great - I just drag and drop 
photos. I have also used for data work on a laptop but usually photos.

Good point.  One caution, the USB card reader we got seems to require 
installation rather than just being plug and play like the flash drives. 
Hopefully they are not all like that.
