Richard,

One thing you do need to do before importing/syncing your Legacy database
for the first time... Get the Pocket Genealogist user guide at
http://www.pocketgenealogist.com/documents.htm and read Chapter 6. It
discusses some file maintenance things you should do with your Legacy
database first to make sure that the 2-way process works successfully. (The
user guide is about 100 pages)

Pocket Genealogist is very strict with regards to updating data back into
Legacy... At any point during the sync if it determines that something is
wrong or if something changed on both sides, it will abort and the Legacy
database will remain untouched. (It actually updates a copy of the database
and if successful, replaces it after the sync) We went to great pains to
make sure that under NO circumstances would it do "bad" things to the
database.

Of course if it does abort, you can still export the changes to a GEDCOM
file and "merge" it into Legacy that way. At that point the 2-way will be
disabled for that database so you'd want to import a fresh copy to start
over.

Off the top of my head, the most obvious thing that doesn't transfer back
and forth is Photos. I know there are a couple of other minor fields but in
general, if it's data that you can enter in Legacy, you can do the same in
Pocket Genealogist. It also should ONLY let you enter data that will
successfully transfer back to Legacy. For example, you can't enter data
that is "longer" than what the field in Legacy will accept. We also
maintain "lists" of valid items just like Legacy, you'll see the exact same
Event list for example.

If you have any questions, please email me at any time.

Jack , Thank you. Very helpful...same sort of rules as synchronizing using
Outlook or other personal data base. Richard

Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] Question Pocket Genealogist file transfer to Legacy

Pocket Genealogist is a brilliant companion to Legacy. It will take your
Legacy database and copy it to the PDA and is just as usable on an iPAQ as
if it were Legacy. There is a full 2-way synchronisation so that changes
made on one machine are updated back to the other. So if you change data on
Legacy then the next time you "sync" the updates go to the iPAQ. Similarly
the other way round. One limitation - you can only make changes on one
machine OR the other, not both! So mimics real life in some way. You go out
add data in PG then bring it home and it updates Legacy. You add more data
in Legacy, sync with the iPAQ and then go out again.

<SNIP> - Nice commentary Jack!
