Actually, Gmail is free Web-based e-mail provided by Google. The search feature you're talking about is the Google desktop search and is something separate.
Go to http://gmail.google.com to find out more. You need to be invited to open an account, but most of us using it have invites to burn, so just ask and you'll be sent one.
