Hi Rich, The find the easiest way to accomplish this is to use a USB memory drive. I keep my database and images on a 1 GB memory drive and can use my database in ANY computer with Legacy installed. I use it at home, at family homes, and at the Family History Center. (All 6 computers have Legacy. I have used it on 4 of them.)
My directory structure on my memory drive is as follows: \genealogy\ (databases) \genealogy\images\ \genealogy\images\paternalLine\ (folder name is my paternal line name and contains those images) \genealogy\images\maternalLine\ (Same concept) \genUtils\Legacy5\ (have the latest version of Legacy5setup.exe so I can install the standard version of Legacy with family members and also access my data on their computers. I then have a directory on my computer's local hard drive called genDump. This directory contains a Backup folder. When I exit my database at home, I run the backup to this folder. \genDump\Backup\ Using this concept, I have never had to worry about "did I remember to backup and restory my database to this computer." Did I make any changes to the database on my laptop before making the changes to my desktop database." My database contains about 35,000 names and I have about 2,300 images (all in medium .jpg format and greatly reduced in size) My database and images currently take about 150 MB. I have plenty of room to grow. The one thing to remember when going from computer to computer is that the drive letter of the memory drive might be different. You have 3 options to deal with this situation for your images to show: 1.) change the drive letters on your home computer so your memory drive is the same as your laptop 2.) change the drive letters on your laptop so your memory drive is the same as your home computer 3.) add path info under options / custom / locations / view current list of multimedia locations. (using this option will allow you to use your drive in any computer and just "ADDING" path info. Don't change it because you will have to change it back when you are on your computer again. Hope this helps.
