Ed,
Do you mean that on the family view, the box to the left of the tag
numbers is blank? This will have a colour in it to indicate which of
your lines that person is in. If there is no colour, either you
haven't set up this feature or that person is not in one of your
lines. There are four colours used, each allocated to one grandparent
of a person you idenitfy, typically yourself. To set up:

1. Navigate to the appropriate "base" person e.g. you.
2. Select Tools > Apply Ancestor Colours and click "Apply Color Coding"
3. To turn on  Ancestor Colour Coding, go to Options > Customise >
View  and ensure Ancestor Colour Coding is checked. You can change the
colours by clicking Change if desired.

The colours will then be applied to each of your grandparent's lines.
To see the tooltips Linda mentioned, you need to have Display Tooltips
checked under Options >Customise > General.
