One way of searching for a word is to make web pages and then batch search these for the word in question. This does return *all* usage of the word for persons' names for example so could produce rather more returns than required but the original poster did not specify what h/she was searching for.

The set up criteria for the web pages in this instance would not really matter. To search the web pages I suggest using HTML Kit available free from: http://www.chami.com/html-kit/

One would also need to download and install the batch-find plug-in available from the same site.

Legacy GEDCOM splits notes in the middle of words by default. Do you export a file with notes split between whole words when you want to search?

What I do is to export my file as a gedcom - which is a simple text file and then to use an ordinary text editor to search that file. It's easy enough then to see which record numbers are involved and then to go back to legacy if I need formatted information - or simply read it from the Gedcom if not.
