An excellent question Keith. Haven't read far enough into the
digest from a couple of days ago to see if/what the answer is.
But it seems to me that there is a more fundamental question.
Why does the file format change on a maintenance update?
With all the other software I've ever worked with, changing the
file format is regarded as a major change to the software, so that
changing the format is never done with upgrades or even point
releases. Only on Major new revisions, such as when M'soft
Word goes from Word 2000 to Word 2003.

Remember that Legacy is essentially an Access Database application. Adding any new data or even changing the size of any field would qualify as a file format change. Since Access also keeps form and report data in the database as well it is not surprising that updates result in a "revised file format". Also Millennium have been very good about adding new functionality in their maintenance releases, not just bug fixes. One change I've noted recently is the addition of an icon to get an internet map for locations in your master location list.

The latest update also included a file revision to match the new Version 6 data structure. I bet if you used Access 2000 or better to compare the latest file with a previous release you will see a lot of new tables/data fields to support Version 6. At least it means that when I do get Version 6 my current file structure will match.
