We call the feature Witnesses but it's really a whole lot more than that. You enter an event one time. You can then link all people involved with that event to it. For each person linked to the even you get to assign what role that person had in the event. They may have been a Witness to the even, or a participant, or what ever name you come up with for the type of role they had for their participation in that event. Many people simply call this feature a Witness feature.

I just don't see how other members of a household listed in a census can be called "witnesses". Some of those people probably weren't home at the time the census taker was there i.e., at work or at school - so how can they be called witnesses?
