This isn't quite what I meant. Let me explain.

I'm saying it's the act of *converting* a mailing list to a web forum or
message board that kills *that* mailing list community. Mailing lists
work, yes. Message boards work, yes.

My observation, though, is that the *current* people don't move forward
to the message board, or at least don't participate in the same manner.
The message board may become bigger, yes, but few of the mailing list
people will be part of that bigness.
