I imported the second copy of the original-herring.fdb file into original-herring and then ran the merge using intellipass. When it finished I was surprised that ALL the records were merged. I did a help general info before I started an the file had 4012 individuals in 1432 families. After the merge there were 4012 individuals and 1432 families. This test was run using Version 5 build date 10 Aug 2005 version number 5.0.0.256 on a machine running Legacy 5 under Windows 98 SE.

When I tried the same thing using Version 6 on Windows XP Home SP2 I got the 89 differences where the intellipass was unable to merge records. I saw while those tests were running that there has been a lot of discussion of changes in the Notes where white space characters seem to have been changed during the import. I checked the records with discrepancies and seemed to get the same thing. Tabs in one file were being replaced with spaces in the imported file.

I am re-running the exercise with Version 5 on the XP machine to see if I get the same discrepancies between records as Version 6 reported under XP. Would the Windows version difference account for the changes to the notes? If we "know" that white space is the problem would ticking the keep left (or whichever is the lower numbered RIN) option for the notes make sure that the original version is kept? In Version 6 the choices seemed to be keep right, keep left or Append. The merge using Version 5 is still running as I write this so I hope the options will be the same. If they are different I will report tomorrow. It is past my bedtime and as soon as the merge finishes in Version 5 I am going to go to bed.

Ed,

After the great hints you gave me on duplication of unknowns and how to watch for them I am going to do as you asked with both the 10 Aug build of Legacy 5 Deluxe and the new Legacy 6 Deluxe which I have installed on a different machine. I have downloaded two copies of the original-herring.fdb file and gave the second copy a different name. I will report back once I have run the two intellishare merges.

Would anyone here be willing to try merging two identical copies of my
legacy database, and see if they get a bunch of records which can't be
automatically merged?
I'd sure like to know if it's just me seeing this problem with the new
database format. If you are, the database is here:

http://www.albemarle-callaway.com/problem-report/

The file is original-herring.fdb in that folder; the other files are
snapshots from mid-merge.

Legacy has been 100% unusable to me since upgrading to the new file
format.

Thank you,
