Books can be sent book rate, which is much cheaper than regular postage...
also slower.

Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] shipping cost ( $7.00)
I put the GASP! $7.00 - somewhat tongue in cheek. Truly, I had just
mailed 3 law school text books for under $5.00, over 10 pounds in books.
I know it has become commonplace but there is something unctuous about $$
padding under title of "shipping".
A $15.00 book becomes a $22.00 book (minus the $1.42 to mail by media mail
& the cost of the packing tape, of course).

* Tax in the shipping cost (YES)
Just so you know -- In the state of California (where I live) the state
requires a tax on shipping. Why, because the business is billing beyond
the actual cost of the postage cost. And the state wants it tax on that
revenue. Who pays for it you do! Welcome to the 21th century business
practices.
Do all businesses do this? the answer is NO and YES. it all depends upon
their policies in shipping.
I hope I answered the GASP! in shipping cost
