If you get a BSOD when you run a user program it is a Windows bug, an operating system should protect itself from programs that tries to overwrite the operating system. The program (Legacy) can crash but not the computer.
I think it has to do with the size of your data set there are some static definitions in Legacy or any library it use. I have no idea on the Legacy internals but is they use 32bits integers they can only handle +-32000 or +64000 or the libraries they use can only handle that size.
Does Legacy works on 64 bit widows? Sven-Ove At 04:45 PM 9/14/2005, you wrote:
No, I didn't update anything....it was a very basic windows. But I have tried to run it previously with all the updates on windows updates site, I've run it every way possible and the only 2 ways it works for me is: 1. in safe mode 2. if I cut my full file into 8 separate files and run a PP Report on each one separately. My full file is 65 MB large. I really think that the size of my file is ONE of the problems...but not likely the only problem. However, it works perfectly fine if I just check all new people or any person who's data has changed (the second box). So, at this point, I have pretty much given up on doing a full scan or a scan of everyone except those marked 'exclude' Donna ***************************************************** Donna L. Hi Donna, when you re-installed XP, did you install the latest Service Pack and updates from the Microsoft website? http://update.microsoft.com Thanks Luc Comeau ----- Original Message ----- From: "Donna Alden-Bugden, RN, MN" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, September 14, 2005 13:54 Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] Memory Hog?? Well I am not sure you can say it is NOT Legacy. Because it works on some or most computers just means it works well in your environment. In my environment it doesn't work. Obviously I thought there was something that conflicts with the functioning of Legacy. However, I have even reformatted my drive and installed JUST Legacy...with no other programs or anything. Still didn't run. So does that mean that ONLY my version of Legacy is conflicting with Windows XP (since that is the only programs installed on my computer after reformatting) What my original comment was, however, was that it took a lot of memory to run the program...and does it really need 65 MB to run a report. My issue with Potential problems report has been long standing and I just don't use it anymore because it doesn't work. But will the memory demands keep going higher to the point where other functions will stop working for people who have say, only 300 MB of memory. I'm not sure what's wrong, but I'm having a hard time believing that your problem is legacy. I too am running 1 GB of RAM with only 1400 AMD processor. I am currently running 41 processes in the background, legacy, Outlook, dictating this message with Dragon NaturallySpeaking, and doing multiplexing on two different monitors. I'm not having any problems with crashes due to the way legacy is handling the memory. I would think that with over 700 MB of memory legacy was causing the crashes that you're having, then just about everybody's computer would be crashing. You might want to check for conflicts, and or run a system diagnostic. By the way, just to make sure that the potential problems report is not the problem, I ran a potential problems report while I'm doing all of this,-it still working fine. I wish I could help you, but I really don't think your problem is not with legacy. I'm not sure if it is just me, but Legacy is quite a memory hog (and I'm not meaning that to be rude...just what I have experienced on my computer). I feel it takes a LOT of memory to run the program and this may be a limiting factor in people buying the program. When I hit Ctrl+Alt+Del, I notice that just sitting there doing nothing it takes a whopping 40 MB...but if I run a potential problem report, it takes 65 MB of my memory...and then in crashes. I have 752 MB of memory and very little running in the background...but I had this same probem with v5. I can do most everything but run potential problems reports....and I still can't run those reports. After climbing to 65 MB the program freezes and then I get a BSOD (Blue Screen of Death). I have even tried running Legacy when Windows XP is in "safe mode" but it won't let me run potential problems reports when there is no printer installed (safe mode does not load printer drivers).
