Following the fairly recent discussion on recording census sources has led me to think more seriously about how I record mine. I've played around a little over the last day or so and this is what I've come up with that I think works OK for me. I've used Cathy's approach to help me get to this with some fine tuning for the way I record locations and a few other things.
Master Sources. I have a census master source for each census year. This keeps the number of master sources down. So it is something like " 1901 Census for Wales". In the comments of the source I pasted the enumerator's instructions from a website I found. Source Detail. Using the source clipboard I enter a source detail like this. " image of the 1901 census for 33 Newport Rd, Cardiff, Glamorganshire, Wales: RG13 Piece 4973 Folio 151 Page 3" In the detail text I enter a transcript of the census image and I attach a picture. It sounds a lot but you only have to set it up once and assign it using the clipboard. Event. Type: Census Description example: Head of the family, age 72 and born in Cardiff, Glamorganshire, Wales. She lived with Daughters Emily C (38), Frances G (36), Adeline M (34), her brother Charles Hy Evans (77) and two servants Date: 1901 Place: Cardiff, Glamorganshire, Wales, UK I also enter an event address to detail the street etc. My event description is changed to read. [FirstHeShe] appeared on the census of [Date] at [Address], [Place], listed as the [-Desc].[Sources][CR][Notes] This gives me a sentence like this. Harriet appeared on the census of 1901 at 33 Newport Rd, Cardiff, Glamorganshire, Wales, UK, listed as the head of the family, age 72 and born in Cardiff, Glamorganshire, Wales. She lived with Daughters Emily C (38), Frances G (36), Adeline M (34), her brother Charles Hy Evans(77) and two servants. In the notes field I paste the full transcription in surrounded by [[ ]]. This allows be to print them or not as I choose. I find I much prefer the narrative style this produces rather than the data table format I was using. Like others have said. Everyone must find what's right for them, but looking at what everyone else is doing has helped me enourmaously in deciding which way to myself. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Cathy Sent: 31 August 2005 01:25 To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Census sources Hi Peter, You'll find heaps in the archives on this.
