Stuart, Organizing your files is such a personal thing- everyone prefers something different. Over the past 30 years I have tried every approach imaginable, and here is the one I like best. The following link takes you to Family Search (LDS church), Research helps, sorted by title, "Organzing your Paper Files" http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/RG/frameset_rg.asp?Dest=G1&Aid=&G id=&Lid=&Sid=&Did=&Juris1=&Event=&Year=&Gloss=&Sub=&Tab=&Entry=&Guide=AL L_REF_DOC_-_Basic_Paper_Filing.ASP
Down in step 5, are three choices- File folders, 3 ring binders, and computer files In this system, you use your pedigree chart, color code the 4 grandparents, then files are color-coded to match those four lines, and are filed alphabetically by surname, given name. It makes it really, really easy to to find people. I hope you find something that is helpful in there.... Should I follow my pedigree chart and have me as 1,my fathers marriage as 2 etc,but then how do I number my brothers ? I thought about having my fathers line in a folder and my mothers in another,to keep the differents lines split. I thought about perhps stepping up in 10's , so ave me as MRIN 10 and my daughter would be 11,my father would be 20,my unmarried brother would be 21 etc,but this seemed to behard work and I have some family groups of mroe than 10?? Im sure somebody must have done this already?? Did anybody find a good practical way of doing it?
