Bob,
Thanks for the results of the "attached file" test. It was reassuring to
know the process works. Indeed I retested by attaching new PDF and XLS
files and my system also will load and display the files. Perhaps my early
failures were done before rebooting the system (that is all that has changed
from my earlier failed attempts). The problem I still have is that Legacy
is not responding as it did in version 5 and earlier versions. Here is the
situation.
The use of a "Sound" or "Video" image as an icon for the display of a PDF or
other file has always been a poor workaround. It is less than obvious that
you need to click on something that says "Sound" in order to display another
file. To help make the situation a little less counterintuitive, I have
always used a small image of a title page of whatever the PFD file was that
would be "played"/ displayed if selected. In version 5 I could then attach
the PFD file as a "sound" file and the interface almost makes sense.
It appears that in version 6 the only sound file that can be attached to an
image is a .WAV file (per the help file). This defeats my attempt to make
some sense out of the situation and all my previously entered non WAV files
attached to images no longer load and display. Bummer!
Bill

Bill,
Just tried attaching a pdf file and an Excel xls file using the "sound" and
"video" links. Both opened fine from within Legacy . . . I also am using
6.0.0.66 Deluxe. I know this doesn't help your situation but maybe
something is not quite right with your installation or with the file
associations in Windows??

Cathy,
Have you checked this "feature" in version 6? I have long used the
technique of attaching PDF and other files, such as worksheets, via a
"sound" file in the picture gallery. I can no longer get that technique
to work in version 6.0.0.66 Deluxe. I have queried Legacy Support but no
reply yet. The PDF files open fine using the default system PDF viewer
outside of Legacy. Ditto with a wks file that will not open via a "sound"
file link.

Hi John,
You can attach any type of file to Legacy in the Sound or Video
dialogues. Just change the file type to all types.
These attached files are available to you from within the program but
will not print in a report - just as a Video or Sound file can't be
printed.
Legacy uses your default PDF reader (and other default programs for other
document types) to read PDF files when you click on them. See Options >
Customise - Launch tab if you have several programs that will read the
same type of file and don't want to use your computer default.

I am new to Legacy, but just recently got the Deluxe Edition, which I
think is great. I have one question:
Can you attach PDF documents to an individual in the picture section?
The reason I ask is; I generated a GEDCOM file from my Brothers Keeper
program which can attach PDF's., I then imported that GEDCOM into Legacy
(Ver 6.0). The PDF files are visable and I can access and view them,
not from a PDF viewer but from a Legacy internal viewer (I think).
I can not find a place to link or attach the PDF file from the picture
section in Legacy, Am I missing something somewhere. Thanks in advance
