I agree that using the unabbreviated version of a location name is great for eliminating confusion. I use the Short Location name in Legacy mainly to eliminate the pesky place commas needed to standardize the location structure, but keep the word county and the spelled out state names.

However, it is still really bothering me that all my pedigree charts look horrible using my Short Location place names. I tried fiddling around with expand/contract feature in the master location list options as some suggested, but it does not work at all for me. Here's why:

1) Adding or stripping the "USA" is an all-or-nothing thing. You cannot strip the USA part from just the short location. Then your whole list sorting is messed up because the non-USA locations are not affected.

2) The expand/contract feature only works on locations formatted with 4 placeholders, so it doesn't affect my short names unless I change them to add the comma place holders (I have a lot of rural ancestors who did not live in a particular town within a county). The contraction feature takes a location like
, Coffee County, Alabama, USA and turns it into
, Coffee County, AL, USA.

3) I also wish there were a way to strip the word "County" from *only* the Short Locations and *only* temporarily so I could print a chart.

Basically, this expand/contract feature really doesn't help me at all and is confusing to use. How does everyone keep the nice, spelled out locations we all seem to want in their reports, and yet have a "pretty" ancestor chart?

Regarding abbreviations; I recently purchased "Getting It Right, the
definitive guide to recording family history accurately" by Mary H.
Slawson. In the book, she recommends, "None of the information used
to substantiate the identity of your ancestor should be abbreviated".

That might sound harsh, and each person must decide to what degree
they will use abbreviations. My current thought is to follow Mary's
recommendation for regular location names, and use abbreviations only
in the short location name. Legacy User Group Etiquette guidelines can be found at:
