Most of my genealogy is American and French Canadian, so I
don't use Canada or USA. But I do write out the province or state,
That is I would never write WV or NY in my file. I always write out
the state province so that I'd write West Virginia, New York or Québec.
IMO abbreviations in place names in genealogy files are EVIL and should
not be used in genealogical place names. Period. Full Stop.
For example, a full place name in my file, if abbreviated
might be Q,Q,Q, Can, but I'd write it as Québec, Québec, meaning
Québec City in the Province of Quebec. Similarly GF, W, NY, USA
is vague if complete, for Glens Falls, Warren, New York, United States of
America.
Part of the vaugeness comes from the fact that I know of at least three
counties in New York who's first initials are W, and if I went to the
trouble to
write "War", it's not a lot more effort to write Warren.
But since there is only one Glens Falls in New York State and I don't know
of another country besides the US that uses the name New York, I
"abbreviate" this place to "Glens Falls, New York" in my file. Even without
the zip code, the Post Office (USPS) can get the mail there!
