Hi Stuart,
Many thanks for the information. I am aware of exif data but have not come
across the Exifer program, nor had I thought of using the data in this way.
It certainly sounds useful and I will be definitely giving it some thought.

Hi Dean,
Yes wouldn't that be nice, but I'm afraid I haven't figured out a way to
do
it.
If it helps, the method I use is to add the data to Legacy whilst I am on
the data in question. So if it is a web page or a jpg then I have it
running
also and toggle from one to the other.
I would welcome any other suggestions also.
If you only use jpg images, then there is one way that goes some way
to achieving what you want. The jpg 'standard' incorporates the
addition of meta data. Essentially there are three types of meta
data; one is the jpg 'comment' field, another is Exif data and the
third is the International Press Council Standards (IPTC). Most
digital cameras use Exif to store a lot of information about the
camera settings at the time the 'photo' was taken. Unfortunately,
camera manufacturers and image enhancing software may not always be
compatible in using the various data fields for each of the above
types of meta data.
So be careful in using the various image editing software.
There is a little shareware program called 'Exifer' which was
primarily designed to backup all of this meta data prior to editing
the image. Once the image is in its final form, Exifer restores the
metadata to the jpg file.
However, Exifer does more than just backup the metadata, it also
allows you to edit some of the fields. One of the fields that can be
used for the purpose you have in mind is the 'Image Description'
field. The reason I highlight this field is that Legacy has a little
known feature that when you are attaching an image to a person or
event within Legacy, it reads the 'Image Description' field and offers
you the opportunity of copying it into the 'Desc' field of the Legacy
image.
There are several benefits of using Exifer to add data to the 'Image
Description' field. It means that you only have to type it up once.
Each time you add an image within Legacy, simply say 'Yes' when Legacy
offers to copy this information into its description field.
For example, for a family photo, you may like to put in the following
type of entry:
L to R: John DOE, Mary SMITH (daughter of Hiram) and Joe BLOW taken at
the christening of Mary's daughter Agatha on 16 Dec 1880.
Exifer is a shareware program and more information can be found at:
http://www.friedemann-schmidt.com/software/exifer/
If anyone wants to know more about using the various metadata fields
then I would be happy to respond to any direct emails.
Having said all of the above, BEWARE, image editing and handling
software do not handle the metadata fields consistently. What I mean
here is that some software will not save data in some fields This
means that some data is essentially deleted when saved using that
software.
Hope this helps.
