Hi Tracy,
I've put my comments below your questions. My philosophy is to
avoid using alternate events except where absolutely necessary
though and to use the source details entries to state exactly
what any source for an event says about the event.

What do others do in this situation? Do I make an alternate
birth/death/marriage/burial for every variation and then a new one
combining all the details for the information screen or leave things
as they are (but put in the exact text from the original list in
source comments area? It doesn't feel right to have the different
sources on the same date in my file, when their listed dates are
slightly different in the files I imported.
I would only create an alternate event if there was a significant
difference in the dates (ie. one has a different year, or two
with different months or days) If all the variations are for the
same "date" though I would use the source details entry to say
that a particular source had only the year or whichever part(s)
of the date instead of a full date.
Also, while I've listed in burial fields [Town name] Cemetery, many of
the imported details have only the town. Is that also treated as
another alt, bur?
Again, as long as all the sources agree on the town I would use
the source details to say that a particular source identified
only the town. The source which does say which cemetery the
person is buried in would have its details include that.
I'm open to suggestions.
Cheers
Tracy
