This topic may have been discussed before, if so I apologize.
I was wondering if there is a way to send a Legacy family file to
someone via email. I have never done this before - and I have
no idea what to do - the person I am sending it too has Family
Tree Maker.
Is this possible to do..? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks - Deb
FTM and Legacy cannot read the data files produced by the other
program directly. You will have to first export your data to a
GEDCOM file (this is a structured text file designed to share
genealogical information). You will find this option on the File
menu in Legacy. Select the Export to and GEDCOM. On the export
window that opens leave the "produce file for" as Legacy and the
character set as ANSI. There are a number of other options about
exporting private individuals and private information. For record
purposes you can enter your information as the compiler by
pressing the compiler button and you can have Legacy add a source
to each person and marriage identifying your data file as the
source. I suggest you do this so that the person who receives the
file will know where the information came from.
Once you have produced the GEDCOM file you can send that as an
attachment in an email to your friend. They will have to import
the data from your GEDCOM into their FTM file. Note that there
will probably be a number of errors generated by FTM when the
file is imported since FTM does not understand some of the data
Legacy will export.
