Actually, fl. is widely used among genealogists, but, as Tracy points out, it's neither a birth or death date--just a point or stretch of history where the person left a record. One might be tempted to use abt. Instead of fl., but, despite what you meant, the program thinks that the birthdate field is just that, regardless of what abbreviation you use (Options>Customize>Dates). The programmers would have to add fl. date fields to represent properly the facts of such entries. Back to Tracey's problem (blank dates), another solution is to guess and put the year in <> brackets. Jonathan
