Correct!

It is not essential to current release version's of browsers to place this
string between the <head></head> tags.

Placing the CSS string in that section WILL WORK and is the ONLY way to
place a style sheet string in all your pages. It simply is not feasible to
manually update each html page.
Give it a go and see for yourself.

Of course you could use a text replacement option - like what can be found
in the free PSPad program.

As for HTML Validator's - I wouldn't be overly concerned that a style sheet
string wasn't in the absolute correct place.
 

For the record I've been coding HTML, PHP, ASP, VB Script etc etc for about
12 years.

I seem to vaguely recall this being discussed a couple of years ago. It
seems that most browsers are forgiving enough to accept this. I think
someone stated that the styles in the .css apply from that point forward in
the document. I don't know what the results would be if you ran the page
thru an HTML validator.
