Hi Tish,
I think you'll only be asked whether you want to delete other files
on the disk if you are backing up to a floppy that already has files on it.
You'll only be asked about overwriting a previous backup if you are
backing up to the same place as a previous backup and using exactly
the same name.
If you are only backing up to a folder on your hard drive, you need
to cut your backup to CD (or floppy or thumb drive or external hard
drive or ... that is, some other physical media) or you'll lose your
backups along with your original files if your hard disk crashes.
You can use Windows Explorer to delete earlier backups. If you don't
know how, look in the Windows Help - it's actually quite good.
I like to keep a few backups (OK a lot <vbg>) in case I don't notice
for weeks or months that I've made an error and deleted stuff I
needed to keep or otherwise messed something up. I don't work on
every branch every week.
When making backups I include the date in the filename in YYYYmmdd
form so that they sort chronologically and I don't have to go to the
file properties/detail view to find out when it was made. I backup to
my hard drive then copy to external drive. Periodically I cut to CD.
After cutting to CD and recently to DVD I delete some backups so that
I only have one per week for the most recent month, then one per
month for the last year on my hard drives.
I do all that despite the fact that I've never had to rely on a
backup. I work on the principal that the week I stop, I'll have a
computer disaster.

Hi, I just was into the site that Sherry sent re backup, done I
believe, by Jim Terry. I always back up, but never have I seen a
screen like the one that he shows, and nowhere does it ever ask if I
want to discard all the other backups done earlier on this same
family file. I Have longed to get rid of some of them, but have
been afraid to do that.
Is there somewhere I need to go within the site to bring up the
screen that Jim Terry showed?
Thanks,
Tish
