Create a table like this in a blank area of your spreadsheet:

Jan 1
Feb 2
Mar 3
Apr 4
May 5
Jun 6
Jul 7
Aug 8
Sep 9
Oct 10
Nov 11
Dec 12

Highlight that table and name it "Months". (The Months table could be on another worksheet in the workbook if you wish.)

Insert a column after that text date. Assuming the text date column is column E, then the new column is column F.

Assuming the first date is in cell E2, paste the formula "=DATE(VALUE(RIGHT(E2,4)),VLOOKUP(MID(E2,4,3),Months,2,0),VALUE(LEFT(E2,2)))" in F2 and copy it down the column.

You now have a sortable date column.

Thanks, Dennis, that got me started!. I exported to CSV and sorted on
birth+location field. Great, now I have the pairs together. But I
guess the field is just text, so
15 Jan 1900 precedes 23 Jan 1820.
Is there a workaround?
