Many thanks to all who responded to my question. I followed Dennis's advice and made a copy of my file, unlinked my mom, and tagged the entire paternal family line. Then I went through and using "untag descendants," I untagged those still living or with very recent deaths. I then exported all persons with an individual tag of 1 to a GEDCOM. It worked perfectly.
