I have a MacBook Pro 15" Santa Rosa 2.2ghz (A1226, MacBookPro3,1) which had the bad nVidia 8600M GT board problem. Good news is that Apple is still honoring the recall from 2008 and replaced the motherboard, bad news is that the "Genius" at the Mac store says that my screen is bad also. So I have an essentially new MacBook Pro that still doesn't display properly on the screen though now I can at least use the DVI out.
Apparently, in addition to the glossy or matte choices, some of these LCDs also had an extra daughter card on the back of the panel and you don't know which you have till you take it all apart. For this reason I'd prefer to get the whole display assembly instead of just the LCD panel. Doesn't matter to me if it's glossy or matte, the rest of my case is already pretty beat up so cosmetics aren't that important either. I can get one for $120 with a 1 year warranty but thought I'd see if anyone here had a dead book with a known good screen.
