AFP. 27 September 2001. Venezuelan humanitarian mission gears up to aid
Afghan refugees.

CARACAS -- Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez said a humanitarian mission
from the South American nation would be deployed to aid refugees from
Afghanistan as soon as the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)
gives the go-ahead.

"If we get the green light from the United Nations," Chavez told the
daily El Nacional, "planes carrying medicine, food, tents, water and aid
workers will take off immediately." He said the group, led by an Army
general whom he did not identify, would be made up of both military
officials and civilians.

A UNHCR representative here said some 1.5 million people have fled
Afghanistan, fearing retaliatory strikes from the United States.
