Note by Hunterbear: The American Socialist magazine -- and its key spearhead, Bert Cochran -- epitomized in the '50s an extremely significant effort by a number of thoughtful and committed folk to build an American Marxian socialism grounded in the rich homegrown traditions of Debs et al. Their flagship project was this excellent monthly whose life and contributions are being brought back to life and into this new and challenging century through the good work of Louis Proyect [Marxmail.] Here is a portion of Louis Proyect's labors -- which he brought forth almost a year ago and which was posted on several lists. We think, for a number of reasons, that it's timely to do so once again. An ecumenically radical -- socialist -- web magazine is much on the minds of a number of us.
The American Socialist had a considerable impact on me -- barely into my twenties and just out of the Army at the beginning of 1955. I should add that I've consistently seen the very contemporary and activist Against the Current, one of my favourite journals always, as being much in the realistically grounded and courageous traditions of Cochran's fine work. And there are certainly others. >From Louis Proyect: If you go to: http://www.marxists.org/history/etol/newspape/amersocialist/index.htm, you will find the home page for the American Socialist/Socialist Union. This consists of dozens of articles from the magazine edited by Bert Cochran and Harry Braverman from 1954 to 1959, most of which appeared on Marxmail last year. Among the contributors are W.E.B. Dubois, Harvey Swados, Joseph Starobin, Isaac Deutscher and John Salter Jr., who is known nowadays as Hunter Gray. You will also find commentary on the Cochranites written by Michael Livingston who argues that Harry Braverman retained a Trotskyist outlook even after leaving the SWP, myself and others. Highly recommended.
