I remember Larry Wall, creator of Perl, saying that Chinese writing was fascinating to him because it was so portable. People in neighbouring provinces can't talk to each other because they don't understand each other, due to mutually incomprehensible dialects. Yet they can all read each others newspapers! I didn't know that this worked backwards in time for thousands of years as well.
