If you're a newbie in Linux, I'd really recommend installing and using a full Linux distro first and becoming accustomed with how Linux works. Something like Ubuntu or Fedora is probably sensible to start with. http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/lfs/view/development/prologue/prerequisites.html describes the expected skill level of someone reading and following the book. For your immediate problem, you need to re-read http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/lfs/view/development/chapter04/settingenvironment.html. Please post further questions on the lfs-support mailing list.
