Well, now I confused more than ever. Jim's message said it was a
"tarball", and you use "make install" to install it. If it is nothing
more than udev rules, why a "make install". I know I don't like that.
I want to see what I'm putting on the system before I do it.

Aren't Udev rules just a couple of files?
