Some may require the links (but in my opinion that makes it poorly
written software), while others such as
http://www.mcmurchy.com/rmlcopydvd/ go after the /dev/{h,s,?}d{?}
devices.

It simply is not that difficult for software developers to poll the
devices and figure out what they are, and what is available, though
in all fairness, it sure would be nice to count on /dev/cdrom,
/dev/cdrecorder, /dev/dvd/, etc., etc., being accurate.
