See section iv where the first sentence says: Building an LFS system is
not a simple task. It requires a certain level of existing knowledge of
Unix system administration in order to resolve problems and correctly
execute the commands listed.

Again, the book says: Downloaded packages and patches will need to be
stored somewhere that is conveniently available throughout the entire
build. A working directory is also required to unpack the sources and
build them. $LFS/sources can be used both as the place to store the
tarballs and patches and as a working directory.

In this case you are given a suggestion, but you can choose something
else. Unpacking can be done anywhere but the usual placement is right
in the directory where that tarballs are located. The only requirement
is that they be accessible from the chroot environment starting in
Chapter 6.

Again, the book does not give every explicit detail and that is done on
purpose. You need to have a sufficient, but relatively low, knowledge
level of Linux use/administration to build LFS.
