What advantage do the alternatives give us? I seen something about
event driven...sounds complicated. As they are now, things are quite
simple, with the most difficult task being keeping track of the links
(which I've been working on automating following the LSB standard). Do
scripts contain dependency information? If so, how about using the LSB
comment blocks directly to kill two birds with one stone? You mentioned
event driven scripts? How do they work? How are events generated and
interpreted? I'm assuming another daemon must be running. Do client
apps needing services also have to be compiled with support, or is there
something akin to inetd/xinetd running the show? Lots of questions
unanswered so far.

A proof of concept would be the best way to start. At this point, the
"advantages" haven't been explained, and I have no interest in reading
some dry documentation without some expected advantage. Give me that
"WOW" feature that makes me want to read, and I will.

The best way to do that, and to gain an understanding of it at the same
time so that *you* can answer questions, is to do the leg work to prove
to all (yourself included) that one of the alternatives is better than
the current boot process. We have a wiki available for your use. The
hints site is also still around if you prefer plain text. You could
also host instructions on your own website with a link sent to the list,
or even just send a text step by step to the list. As long as the
advantages *and* *disadvantages* are covered we'll take a look. OTOH,
don't bother sending in anything if you can't objectively list
disadvantages as well as advantages, as nothing is without flaw.
