This looks like you are right, you don't have the right drivers.
There are three levels you need
file system (according to how you did your high level format)
device class (ATA, SATA, SCSI/SASI etc.)
exact chipset
This looks like you are failing at a pretty low level, possibly
the chipset. What does lspci show?
