So where did you put the sources?  The book says:

mkdir -v $LFS/sources
chmod -v a+wt $LFS/sources

What are you using for $LFS?  That is,

echo $LFS

Also, what is the output of:

$ mount
$ fdisk -l

   -- Bruce
--
