I would suggest look at your build history and compare with the book. I hope you didn't reuse bzip2 source from ch5 for ch6. That could be the issue. Since you can't use tar with bz2 archives, I'd suggest extract bzip2 from the host, then build in chroot. Clearly something wasn't done between ch5 bzip2 and ch6 bzip2.
